The betrayal and arrest of Jesus

John 18:1-14 1 After Jesus had said this, he went out with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Stream. There was a garden there, and he entered it with his disciples. 2 Judas, who betrayed Jesus, also knew the place, because Jesus and his disciples went there many times to gather together. 3 Judah took a company of soldiers, and the officers of the chief priests and Pharisees came into the garden with lanterns, torches, and weapons. 4 Jesus knew everything that was going to happen to him, so he came out and said to them, “Whom are you looking for?” 5 They answered, “Jesus the Nazarene.” Jesus said, “I am.” Judas, who betrayed him, did the same They stand there. 6 When Jesus said, “I am,” they drew back and fell to the ground. 7 He asked them again, “Whom are you looking for?” They said, “Jesus the Nazarene.” 8 Jesus said, “I told you that I am. If you are looking for me, let these people go! 9 This was to fulfill what Jesus had said before, “I have lost none of those whom you gave me.” 10 Simon Peter had a sword, and he drew it, and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting him off. right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. 11 Then Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword back into its sheath! Shall I not drink the cup that my Father has given me?” 12 Then the soldiers, the commander, and the officers of the Jews took Jesus and bound him. , 13 He brought them to Annas first, because Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. 14 This Caiaphas was the one who said to the Jews, “It is good for a man to die for the people.”

Here it is said that the Lord Jesus and his disciples entered a garden, which was the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives. Judas who betrayed the Lord Jesus, knew this place because the Lord Jesus often gathered here with the disciples. Judas led a company of soldiers and others to arrest the Lord Jesus. in parallel passages, it mentioned that Judas betrayed the Lord with a kiss of the Lord Jesus as a signal. Here we also see that the Lord Jesus said a word, and they drew back and fell to the ground. We see the power of the Lord Jesus. The disciples wanted to use the sword, but the Lord Jesus stopped them. The Lord Jesus could have asked the Father to send many angels, but He did not, because His time had come. The Lord Jesus protected the disciples and asked them to let them go, but he himself was arrested. The Lord Jesus was bound and then brought before Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was the high priest that year. Caiaphas had prophesied that it would be beneficial for a man to die for the people, that is, he predicted that the Lord Jesus would die for the people.
